The PHCC Story

During the 1880s, the transition from outhouses to indoor plumbingwas moving at a rapid pace, starting with better homes and commercial buildings. The burgeoning market for indoor plumbing spurred some gasfitters and other metal workers to specialize in this work.

The true craftsmen sought ways to distinguish those who knew what they were doing from those who didn’t. In 1882, a group of these new tradesmen in New York City banded together to form the Master Plumbers Association of New York.  Shortly afterward, a like-minded group joined forces in Brooklyn.

In 1883, the 125 members of the New York group formed the National Association of Master Plumbers (NAMP) to provide the public with a complete, safe and sanitary plumbing system. NAMP was the forerunner of the National Association of Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors (NAPHCC), which later became the Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors–National Association (PHCC).

As America’s first and foremost trade association dedicated to the construction industry, the Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors—National Association has much to celebrate. Since 1883, PHCC has a unique heritage of bringing plumbing, heating and cooling contractors together to do what they cannot do alone – to advance the plumbing and HVACR industry at all levels for the success of our members and to protect public health and safety. We’re very proud of our years of service and for the loyalty and trust of our membership.

It’s remarkable that an entity can achieve in more than 130 years of continual service. Brands including Seiko, Bacardi, Dial Soap and Berlitz share this distinction. And when you look for similarities between PHCC and these long-term brands we have one thing in common – a focus on excellence.

Today, PHCC has more than 3,500 contractor members from open and union shops, who work in the residential, commercial, new construction, industrial service and repair industry segments. Our members strive to improve their professionalism through an alliance with PHCC and rely on the association to lobby local, state and federal government, provide forums for networking and educational programs, and deliver quality products and outstanding services.

As history and current activities indicate, we are committed to be the leading provider of resources that will enable contractors to become the most profitable, knowledgeable, and technologically savvy plumbing and HVACR professionals.

PHCC will continue to provide the foundation and support for issues that impact our member contractors and the consumer. The changes we seek and the legislation we believe in will generate substantial impact within our industry, for the customers we serve and our environment.
